    Cannabis Concentrates: Shatter, Rosin, Live Resin and Distillate

    Concentrates strip away plant material and leave cannabinoids and terpenes behind. Flower typically tests between 15 and 25 percent THC. Concentrates commonly run 60 to 90 percent, and refined distillates can exceed 95 percent.

    The names are mostly about texture and processing rather than quality, which makes the category harder to navigate than it needs to be.

    The Real Divide: Solvent or Solventless

    Everything else is detail. This is the distinction that matters for both quality and safety.

    Solvent extraction uses a chemical to dissolve cannabinoids out of plant material, then removes the solvent. Common solvents are butane, propane, ethanol and supercritical CO2. Done properly with proper purging, residual solvent levels fall below action limits. Done badly, solvent remains in the product.

    Solventless extraction uses only physical means: heat, pressure, ice water and agitation. No chemical to leave behind. Generally more expensive per gram because yields are lower.

    If you take one practical rule from this page: a solvent-extracted concentrate without a residual solvent panel on its certificate of analysis is not worth buying.

    Solvent-Based Types

  1. Shatter. Glass-like, translucent, snaps when broken. The texture comes from how it is purged and handled rather than from higher quality. Stable and easy to portion.
  2. Wax, budder and crumble. Same underlying extract agitated or whipped during purging, producing opaque, softer textures. Easier to handle than shatter, sometimes with better terpene retention.
  3. Live resin. Made from fresh-frozen plants rather than dried and cured material, preserving terpenes that are lost during drying. More aromatic and flavourful, usually somewhat lower in THC because terpenes occupy mass.
  4. Distillate. Refined by fractional distillation to isolate a single cannabinoid, typically over 90 percent THC. Nearly odourless and flavourless, because terpenes are stripped out. Most vape cartridges use distillate with terpenes added back, sometimes botanical rather than cannabis-derived.
  5. Sauce and high terpene extract. Deliberately terpene-rich preparations, often with visible crystalline THCA in a terpene-rich liquid.
  6. Solventless Types

  7. Hash and dry sift. The oldest concentrates. Trichome heads separated mechanically from plant material by sieving. Potency varies widely with technique.
  8. Ice water hash and bubble hash. Plant material agitated in ice water so brittle trichome heads break off and are collected through mesh screens. Quality graded by how cleanly it melts.
  9. Rosin. Heat and pressure applied to flower or hash to squeeze out resin. Live rosin, pressed from ice water hash made from fresh-frozen material, is the premium end of the category.

  11. Dabbing. Applying concentrate to a heated surface and inhaling the vapour. Temperature matters more than most people realise. Lower temperatures, roughly 500 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, preserve terpenes and produce better flavour with gentler vapour. Higher temperatures produce bigger clouds and destroy terpenes while creating more harmful degradation products. Cooler is better.
  12. Vape cartridges. Convenient, usually distillate, and the most common place counterfeits appear.
  13. Adding to flower. Sprinkling hash or kief onto a bowl or joint, an easy way to increase potency substantially.
  14. Edibles. Distillate is what most commercial edibles are made with.
  15. The Potency Problem

    This deserves its own section because it is the main risk and it is not about the extraction method.

  16. Tolerance escalates quickly. Regular high-potency use drives CB1 downregulation faster, so returning to flower can feel like nothing.
  17. Cannabis use disorder risk scales with potency. Risk associations in the literature increase with THC concentration, and concentrates are the highest concentration products available.
  18. Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome appears predominantly in heavy chronic users, a category concentrate users enter more easily.
  19. Acute overconsumption is easy when a single inhalation can deliver more THC than an entire joint. Anxiety, racing heart and disorientation follow.
  20. Psychosis risk associations are stronger with higher-potency products.
  21. None of that makes concentrates unusable. It does mean a beginner should not start here, and that a small dab is a genuine dose rather than a starting point.

    Buying Sensibly

  22. Residual solvent panel for anything solvent-extracted. Non-negotiable.
  23. Full certificate of analysis covering pesticides and heavy metals, since extraction concentrates contaminants along with cannabinoids. A pesticide level acceptable in flower can be concentrated well past safety in an extract.
  24. Buy licensed. Illicit cartridges were central to the 2019 EVALI lung injury outbreak, traced substantially to vitamin E acetate used as a cutting agent.
  25. Check appearance. Quality extract is amber to light gold. Very dark colour suggests degradation or poor starting material.
  26. Store cold and dark in an airtight container, since terpenes evaporate and cannabinoids degrade.

    Concentrates run three to four times flower potency and the meaningful distinction is solvent against solventless, not texture. Live resin and live rosin preserve terpenes from fresh-frozen material, and distillate strips everything except one cannabinoid. Dab cooler for flavour and fewer degradation products, insist on a residual solvent panel, and treat the potency as the main risk.
