Cannabinoids arrived in sport through recovery marketing rather than performance claims, which is a reasonable framing since there is no credible case that cannabis improves athletic performance. The interesting questions are what the rules allow and whether recovery claims hold up.
The Regulatory Position
CBD was removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list effective 2018. It is permitted in and out of competition.
THC remains prohibited in competition. WADA classifies it as a substance of abuse, and testing applies a urinary threshold for carboxy-THC of 150 ng/mL, set well above trace exposure to reduce the chance of sanctioning athletes for out-of-competition use.

What Recovery Claims Rest On
The proposed mechanisms are the same ones behind cannabinoid claims generally: reduced inflammatory signalling through CB2 receptors, altered pain perception, and improved sleep.
Sleep is the most defensible of these for athletes, because sleep is genuinely central to recovery and cannabis reliably shortens sleep onset. The caveats from the sleep literature apply in full: THC suppresses REM, tolerance to the sleep benefit develops within weeks, and stopping causes rebound insomnia. An athlete building a nightly dependence on a sleep aid that degrades with use has traded a short-term gain for a medium-term problem.
For muscle soreness and exercise-induced damage, human evidence specific to athletes is thin. Small studies of CBD and markers of muscle damage or perceived soreness have produced inconsistent results, and sample sizes are generally too small to settle anything. The honest position is that this is plausible and unproven.
Performance Effects Are Negative
THC impairs reaction time, motor coordination, attention and short-term memory acutely. For any sport requiring precision, timing or rapid decision-making, that is a performance decrement rather than a neutral effect.
Cannabis also acutely raises heart rate and can lower standing blood pressure, which is not a helpful combination during exertion. Reports of cannabis improving flow states or exercise enjoyment describe subjective experience, and subjective enjoyment is not performance.
The one exception people cite is training tolerance in endurance work, where some report using cannabis to make long sessions less tedious. Reduced discomfort perception during exertion is a double-edged property: discomfort is often information.
The Anti-Inflammatory Question Cuts Both Ways
There is an underappreciated wrinkle. Post-exercise inflammation is not purely damage, it is part of the adaptive signalling that drives training adaptation. This is the same reasoning behind concerns that routine high-dose NSAID use may blunt training adaptations.
If cannabinoids meaningfully suppressed exercise-induced inflammation, they might interfere with adaptation as well as soreness. Since the human evidence for meaningful anti-inflammatory effect is weak, this is a theoretical concern rather than a demonstrated problem, and it is a reason not to assume more suppression is better.
Practical Guidance for Athletes
Bottom Line
CBD is permitted by WADA and THC is prohibited in competition above a 150 ng/mL carboxy-THC threshold, so full-spectrum products are a testing hazard. Sleep is the most plausible recovery benefit with well-known downsides, and soreness evidence is thin. Cannabis does not improve performance, and THC measurably impairs it.
