Pet CBD is a large market with more genuine research behind it than most human consumer CBD claims. Veterinary trials have used defined doses and objective outcome measures, which is more than can be said for a lot of human CBD marketing.
THC is an entirely separate matter, and the difference is anatomical.
Why Dogs React Badly to THC
Dogs have a higher density of CB1 receptors in the cerebellum than humans do. The cerebellum controls balance and coordination, which is why THC affects dogs disproportionately and produces a distinctive presentation.

THC toxicity in dogs is one of the more common veterinary emergencies in legalised regions, and cases have risen alongside legal markets. Dogs eat entire packages rather than one square, and edibles carry compounding dangers: chocolate is toxic to dogs, and xylitol in sugar-free products is severely toxic.
If your dog has eaten cannabis, contact a vet immediately and say what it ate. Concealing it delays correct treatment and can lead to unnecessary and expensive investigation. Vets are not interested in reporting you, they are interested in treating the animal.

What the CBD Research Shows
Two studies are worth knowing because they used real methodology.
Osteoarthritis. A Cornell University trial of CBD oil in dogs with osteoarthritis reported improved comfort and activity levels, using a dose of 2 mg per kilogram twice daily. Owner and veterinary assessments both indicated improvement. This is among the better-designed studies in the entire consumer cannabinoid field.
Epilepsy. A Colorado State University study of CBD in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy reported a reduction in seizure frequency in the treatment group. Effects were modest and the study was small, and it points in a consistent direction with the human epilepsy evidence.
Anxiety. Frequently the reason owners buy CBD, and the least supported. Studies of noise phobia and separation anxiety have produced mixed and generally unimpressive results.
Dosing and Safety
Veterinary research has generally used doses around 2 mg per kilogram twice daily for osteoarthritis, which is considerably higher than many commercial pet products deliver per serving. Check whether the product can actually reach a studied dose for your animal's weight.

Product Quality Is a Real Problem
The pet supplement market is less scrutinised than the human one, and there is no FDA-approved CBD product for animals.
Testing of pet CBD products has found mislabelled cannabinoid content, sometimes with less CBD than claimed and sometimes with detectable THC. THC in a product intended for a dog is not a trivial labelling error given the sensitivity described above.

Worth knowing that veterinary rules on discussing cannabis have varied by jurisdiction, and in some places vets have been restricted in what they can recommend. That has been changing.
Even where a vet cannot recommend a product, they can advise on interactions with your animal's medication, run baseline bloodwork, help you calculate a weight-based dose, and rule out conditions that need actual treatment. Arthritis pain in dogs has established treatments, and CBD should not displace them without discussion.
