A strain name suggests a fixed thing, like a dog breed. Cannabis genetics do not work that way, and the gap between what a name implies and what it delivers is the source of most consumer confusion.
Genotype and Phenotype
Genotype is the genetic code a plant carries. Phenotype is how that code expresses given the environment it grows in.
Plant ten seeds from the same cross and you get ten related but distinguishable plants. Some grow taller, some finish earlier, some smell of citrus while their siblings smell of fuel. These are all the same strain by name and different phenotypes in reality.
Breeders select among phenotypes, then propagate the chosen one by cloning, taking cuttings so every plant is genetically identical to the mother. That is how a specific expression gets locked in. A strain sold as seed is a population. A strain sold as clone is one individual copied.
This explains something growers know and consumers do not: seed-grown cannabis of the same strain varies, and clone-grown cannabis of the same cut is consistent.
Stabilising a Line
Getting from an interesting one-off plant to a line that breeds true takes generations.
Most commercial cannabis has not been stabilised to the standard of established agricultural crops. Cannabis breeding was illegal for decades, which kept it out of institutional plant science and left much of the work informal.
Feminised and Autoflowering Seed
Two production techniques dominate the seed market.
Feminised seed produces almost exclusively female plants, which matter because only females make resinous flower. It works by inducing a female plant to produce pollen, commonly using silver thiosulphate, then using that pollen on another female. No male genetics are involved, so the offspring are female. Occasional hermaphroditism is the failure mode.
Autoflowering varieties flower based on age rather than light cycle, a trait from Cannabis ruderalis. They finish quickly and stay small, which suits limited space and outdoor climates with short seasons. The historical trade-off was lower potency and smaller yield, though breeding has narrowed that gap considerably.
Landraces and Why They Matter
Landrace varieties are populations that adapted over long periods in a particular region without deliberate modern breeding, such as Afghani, Durban and Thai types. They are the genetic reservoir modern hybrids were built from.
They matter for the same reason wild crop relatives matter elsewhere. Decades of selecting hard for THC narrowed commercial genetics considerably, and traits like disease resistance, drought tolerance and unusual cannabinoid ratios sit in landrace populations. Genomic work indicates domestication happened in East Asia, with fibre and drug types diverging later under human selection.
Why the Name on the Jar Fails You

What Breeders Are Selecting For Now
Priorities have shifted away from maximum THC. Current targets include specific cannabinoid ratios such as balanced THC and CBD, high-CBG cultivars, mould and mildew resistance, terpene profiles for extraction, and compressed flowering times for indoor cycling.
Bottom Line
Cannabis breeding is generations of selection among phenotypes, locked in by cloning and stabilised by backcrossing. Feminised seed removes males from the equation and autoflowers remove the light cycle. Landraces hold the diversity that hard THC selection narrowed. And none of that makes a strain name trustworthy, so buy on lab results.
