Memory disruption is the cognitive effect people notice most and describe least accurately. Cannabis does not delete existing memories. It interferes with encoding, the process of turning experience into a memory you can retrieve later.
That distinction explains almost every pattern people report.
The Mechanism
The hippocampus is essential for forming new declarative memories, and it has one of the highest CB1 receptor densities in the brain. THC activating those receptors disrupts the synaptic signalling that hippocampal encoding depends on, including long-term potentiation, the cellular process underlying memory formation.
So while intoxicated, experiences are recorded less reliably. Memories formed before use are unaffected, which is why you can remember your childhood perfectly and not remember what you said an hour ago.
Which Types of Memory Are Affected
Memory is not one system, and cannabis does not hit all of it equally.
The pattern is that recording new information suffers while previously stored information and learned skills remain accessible.
During, After, and Long After
Acute. Impairment is clear and dose dependent, lasting hours. Inhaled effects peak within 30 minutes and fade over a few hours. Oral effects last considerably longer, so impairment persists longer than people expect.
Residual. Impairment can persist beyond obvious intoxication, particularly with heavy use. Some research reports deficits lasting into the following day, which matters for anyone using nightly and working the next morning.
After abstinence. This is the encouraging part. Studies of adult cannabis users generally show cognitive performance recovering over sustained abstinence, with meaningful improvement over weeks. CB1 receptor availability, downregulated by chronic use, also recovers over a similar timescale.
Heavy long-term use. Some studies report persistent subtle deficits in heavy long-term users even after abstinence. Findings are inconsistent and confounded by baseline differences and by age of onset.
Age of First Use Changes Everything
The most consistent moderator across the literature is when someone started.
The brain develops into the mid-twenties, with prefrontal maturation and synaptic pruning continuing through adolescence, and the endocannabinoid system participates in that process. Heavy adolescent cannabis use is associated with poorer verbal learning and memory, and with reduced educational attainment.
The much-discussed research suggesting IQ decline among people who began heavy use in adolescence and continued has been challenged on methodology, particularly regarding socioeconomic confounding, and later sibling-comparison work has moderated the estimated effect. The direction of concern has held up better than the magnitude.
For adults who started as adults, the recovery evidence is more reassuring.
Does CBD Change Anything
There is some evidence that CBD attenuates THC-induced cognitive impairment, consistent with its action as a negative allosteric modulator at CB1. Studies comparing high-THC low-CBD cannabis with balanced products have reported less memory impairment with the balanced products.
This has a practical implication that runs against market trends. Products have moved toward very high THC and negligible CBD, which is the combination most likely to impair memory.

Cannabis impairs encoding rather than erasing memories, through CB1 receptors in the hippocampus. Working memory, verbal learning and prospective memory take the hit while skills and older memories are preserved. Adult users largely recover with abstinence, adolescent onset carries the most durable concern, and high-THC low-CBD products are the worst combination for memory.
